MAIN HALL

A Stradivarius encased in glass

The unique surroundings of the Main Hall create unforgettable musical memories for the concert visitor. The auditorium seating and stage are situated in an oval-shaped ‘shoebox’ hall.
Flexibility in acoustics is achieved with a canopy, which can be raised and lowered above the stage, and via the echo chamber along the side walls, with 188 acoustic doors and woollen acoustic banners (2.7 km). The grooved wall surfaces in the auditorium absorb echoes. The wood-panelled hall is completely surrounded by a glass ‘shell’ on the outside.

An internationally respected acoustic marvel

Since the grand opening on 9 March 2000, Sibelius Hall and the acoustics of its main concert hall have received a great deal of international attention. In 2006, Britain’s Gramophone magazine named Sibelius Hall one of the five best venues in the world, and the best modern hall. In October 2009, the Sydney Morning Herald included Sibelius Hall in its list of the world’s top 10 concert halls in the world – a list that included New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Berliner Philharmonie.

In 2007, a rare breed of concert organ was installed in the Main Hall. This French Romantic organ swells majestically in concerts, celebrations, and conference openings, but performances can also be arranged for groups upon request.

An elegant location for large functions

The harmonious colour scheme of the Main Hall provides a pleasant setting for large conferences, seminars, and celebrations. The hall has successfully hosted film showings with orchestra and organ accompaniment. Lighting effects can conjure up a special atmosphere or colour palette.

Entrance to seats in the stalls is via the echo chambers. Access to the balconies is directly via the balconies in the Forest Hall.

High-standard audiovisual and information technology, image transmission to other rooms,
