Kyiv Grand Ballet, one of Ukraine’s leading ballet companies, will arrive in Finland again at the beginning of next year with Swan Lake, one of its most loved ballets. The classical ballet composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky is still more than a century after its composition the most danced ballet in the world – and according to many, the most beautiful ballet. Swan Lake tells the story of love and the eternal battle between light and darkness, which is symbolized by the ballet’s black and white swan. Swan Lake contains all the rich elements of 19th century romantic ballet and is considered the pinnacle of classical dance as we know it today.
In Finland, the role of Odette-Odile is alternated between the Japanese Mie Nagasava, who graduated from the world’s most prestigious Vaganova Ballet Academy, and the Argentinian Ana Sophia Scheller, who was also a principal dancer of the New York City Ballet. Ukrainian Viktor Tomashek, who has won numerous international awards and graduated from the famous Kyiv State Choreographic School, will be seen as Prince Siegfrid.
– I have been asked if it is appropriate to dance Russia’s most famous ballets today. I believe that, like Shakespeare, Tchaikovsky belongs to all of humanity. Ballet is a universal language. It knows no boundaries, says Alexander Stoyanov, founder and artistic director of Kyiv Grand Ballet.
Since 2014, the Kyiv Grand Ballet has delighted audiences in the United States, Canada, Australia, throughout Europe and Scandinavia. Most of the dancers are Ukrainian, only some of the dancers come from Japan, USA, Italy and Spain. In Finland, the Kyiv Grand Ballet was last seen in early 2024.
