The Lahti Symphony Orchestra will give three concerts at the festival conducted by Dalia Stasevska. The theme of the orchestral concert on Thursday, 1 September 2022, is ‘Flora and Fauna’, and the concert will feature Pan and Echo, the concert suite from Pelléas et Mélisande, The Wood-Nymph (melodrama) and Snöfrid.
The suite from Pelléas et Mélisande contains almost all of the exquisitely nuanced incidental music that Sibelius wrote for Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist play about forbidden love.
Skogsrået (The Wood-Nymph) are Snöfrid are both based on poems by Viktor Rydberg. In each of them, a man encounters a mystical female figure: the Wood-Nymph leads him to eternal longing and a solitary death, whilst Snöfrid urges the hero to fight for higher ideals.
Duration: Approx. 2 hours, includes intermission.
