Lahti Symphony Orchestra: The Planets

Lahti Symphony Orchestra: The Planets

JOINT CONCERT WITH THE VIVO YOUTH ORCHESTRA

ERKKI LASONPALO, conductor

John Williams: Star Wars Main Title
Gustav Holst: The Planets

5:30pm Introduction to the concert / Erkki Lasonpalo and Maija Kylkilahti

The Planets is a masterpiece by the British composer Gustav Holst, a work that has no equal. Combining astrology and astronomy, the flood of orchestral sound encapsulates both the ideology of the early 20th century and the new infinite musical possibilities. The Planets is also an ageless work that has defied the ravages of time for over a century; its innovative effects still resonate with listeners. It is also an inexhaustible source of inspiration for film composers – one that also inspired John Williams, who took full advantage of Holst’s style in his Star Wars music

The concert season culminates in a power display of cosmic proportions when, to mark its 40th anniversary, the youth symphony orchestra Vivo joins the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. The concert is conducted by Vivo’s artistic director Erkki Lasonpalo.

The length of the concert is about 2 hours, no intermission.
